3 Important Things to Know to Attract/Work with Millennials

LCN Pastors Joey Cook and Nathan Cline shared the stage at the Exponential Conference in Orlando.

Here are the high points:

  • There are 78 million Millennials alive today, which makes them the largest generation in the US.
  • Millennials are also the most researched, talked about, analyzed, and oftentimes criticized generation in recent history. To capitalize on the enormous potential of the largest generation alive today, leaders have to know how to motivate and inspire Millennials to be mobilized for maximum impact in the Church and in the city for the Gospel.

    1. Engagement over Entertainment
We (Millennials) don’t want to simply sit down and be entertained. We want to engage! We want to be heard, be given a seat at the table, and invest in the organization. The most frequently asked question we get from churches is, “What do we need to change about Sunday morning to attract Millennials?” Our answer: Don’t do ministry for Millennials, do ministry with Millennials. Engagement and opportunity attracts us.
    2. Mission over Money
You don’t need a ton of money to attract Millennials. You don’t have to have the most cutting edge facilities. More than money, Millennials are attracted to your mission. If you’ve got big vision and mission, then Millennials will be attracted to it. In fact, they’ll get on board as volunteers. Mission and vision attracts us.
    3. Collaboration over Competition
If you do ministry in a way that treats other churches and organizations within your city as “competition” instead of “teammates,” then you’ll lose Millennials. Millennials are collaborators, so your organization needs to be open to working with others instead of doing ministry in a silo. Collaboration and partnerships attract us.

The Great Commission

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
